AWARENESS PROGRAMME AT SIRUVAPURI VILLAGE

Waste is constantly generated in one’s apartment complex or office building.  It is important to dispose it appropriately and responsibly. Waste segregation facilitates the process of reuse, recycling, and recovery of waste. This will help in preventing environmental pollution.

To make the rural people know the significance, Eco Club in association with the Department of English organised an Awareness Programme on the importance of segregation of Biodegradable and Non-Biodegradable wastes on 13.2.2023 at Siruvapuri Village. Coordinators of this club conveyed this message through a Street Play. 

This made the rural area people understand that, to reduce the risk of environmental pollution, wastes must be segregated into biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes in two separate dustbins for its effective treatment and disposal.

ORIENTATION PROGRAMME ON "VAYAL"

Eco Club organised an Orientation Programme on "Vayal" - rooted in nature on 23.1.2023 at T.Thomas Auditorium between 2 and 3pm in the presence of Mrs.Anuradha, Dean of Students and Mrs.P.Kalpana, Assistant Professor in Mathematics, Eco Club Coordinator.

"An organic farmer is the best peacemaker today, because there is more violence, more death, more destruction, more wars, through a violent industrial system. And to shift away from that world of violence, to a world of peace, agriculture is the best way and hence the farmers can be termed as the peacemakers of the world."

Mr. Sujithkumar is one such peacemaker of Vayal who was the Resource person who stressed the importance of farming along with a beautiful PPT Presentation where the students came to know the significance of growing and maintaining the plants .

E.Prathisha, Eco Club Coordinator of II B.Sc.Computer Science gave an introductory note about him.

Mr.Manikandan was our another guest who spoke about the activities happening in Vayal.

They were given with a sapling as a gesture of honour. 

The program was concluded by a vote of thanks given by K.Rithika, Eco Club Member of II B.Sc.Chemistry and the whole program was hosted by V.Karunya Nivetha, Council Member of III B.Sc.Mathematics.

MIME ON BHOGI - THEN AND NOW

Pongal is the harvest festival of Tamil Nadu, celebrated on the first day of ‘Thai’ (Tamil month). A festival to thank God for all his goodness and mercies and to look forward to a prosperous year. The festival is observed over the span of 4 days in the state as Bhogi festival, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Kaanum Pongal. 

In particular, Bhogi festival is the day to get rid of negative energy and turn one's mind towards salvation and make a fresh start. In olden days, people used to burn unwanted things like old clothes, mats and broomsticks in the belief that new things will usher into their lives. But nowadays, people started burning stuffs like plastics, rubber tyres which in turn has generated big air pollution in recent years. 

As a part of Pongal celebration in college, Eco Club showcased a 'MIME' on 13.1.2023 which focused on how people celebrated Bhogi in olden days as well as now. This was shot by Thanthi TV. 

This created awareness among the viewers and made them to resolute in celebrating Bhogi in an eco-friendly way.

WORD SEARCH - PUZZLE COMPETITION ON CLIMATE CHANGE

“Conservation means the wise use of the earth and its resources for the lasting good of mankind” – Gifford Pinchot

The aim of celebrating National Conservation Day is to lay the foundation of a healthy environment so that our societies remain stable and productive — today and in the future.

To mark the occasion, several events and programs are organised to make people aware of the current situation and spread awareness on how people can do their bit to conserve nature.

Likewise, on account of the same, Eco Club and Science Club jointly organised a "WORD SEARCH-PUZZLE" competition on 21.12.2022 on the theme 'Climate Change' at RF2 at 2pm. This individual event made the students to participate keenly.

This activity stressed the importance of preserving our natural resources among students.

CONFERENCE ON YOUTH AND CLIMATE

Young people are not only victims of climate change. They are also valuable contributors to climate action. They are agents of change, entrepreneurs and innovators. Whether through education, science or technology, young people are scaling up their efforts and using their skills to accelerate climate action.

Don Bosco Arts and Science College, Don Bosco Youth Ministry and Poovulagin Nanbargal organised a one day conference on "Youth and Climate" on 28.10.2022 at St.Bede's School Auditorium, Santhome, Chennai.

Four eminent speakers namely Dr.Ezhilan Naganathan, Member of Legislative Assembly, Thousand Lights, Prof.Sulthan Ismail, Member of State Planning Commission, Dr.Sivaraman, Member of State Planning Commission and Prof.S.Janagarajan, SaciWATERs spoke on the roles of youth in climate change. Highlighting the theme, various programs were conducted.

Around 35 students participated from our college and got benefited through the discussions made in the conference and through all other events.

Through this valuable program, students understood that the contributions of youth are very much necessary in climate change.

E-POSTER COMPETITION ON POLLUTION FREE DIWALI

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights is one of the major festivals in India. Though it is celebrated with joy and cheer, the massive amount of pollution generated during this festival is one of its negative side. In order to avoid emission of harmful pollutant fumes, one must get rid of burning firecrackers. To make the students know the importance of protecting the God given beautiful environment, Eco club organised an E-Poster competition on the theme Pollution Free Diwali on 23.10.2022 on account of Diwali celebration. Students from various departments participated eagerly. After the analysis of all the posters, winners were selected.

The winners of this competition are:

Thus, through this the students gained the knowledge of how to celebrate a happy and healthy Diwali.

INVITE TO THE E-POSTER COMPETITION ON POLLUTION FREE DIWALI

On account of Diwali celebration, Eco club is organising an E-Poster competition on the theme Pollution Free Diwali on 23.10.2022.

Green crackers are environment-friendly, which unlike regular crackers do not cause emission of harmful pollutant fumes in the atmosphere. So this is conducted to insist the students to use green crackers which would be a great step of caution towards the people around and also for the environment.

LAUNCH OF LIFE MISSION - A GLOBAL INITIATIVE BY INDIA

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UN secretary general Antonio Guterres on Thursday launched Mission LIFE (Lifestyle For Environment) a global initiative by India to combat climate change and make it a people's movement across the world. Modi said at a time when the world is being sought to be divided into rival and antagonistic blocks, the mission can be a unifying bond as he highlighted the need for all countries to come together to address the "emergency" of climate change. Mission LIFE aims to change people's collective approach towards sustainability.

Addressing a gathering after the launch of Mission LiFE at the Statue of Unity, PM Narendra Modi said, "Now we are living in a world where there are talks of which country is with which nation or against which nation or group. But Mission LIFE (Lifestyle for Environment) brings everyone together as pro-planet people." Heads of 11 countries have praised the Indian government for taking this lead.

Invoking Gandhi's words that "the world has enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed", the UN secretary general said, "This perfectly captures the situation we face now and, unfortunately, greed is prevailing over need. We need to reverse this trend. The plane is ready to support each and every one of us. But we must treat its resources with wisdom and respect."

PANEL DISCUSSION ON EARLY WARNING SYSTEM

On account of International Day for Disaster Reduction, Eco club organised a Panel discussion on Early Warning System on October 14,2022 at RF2 at 2pm.

A brief introduction about the topic was given by Mrs.P.Kalpana, Assist. Professor in Mathematics, ECO club coordinator followed by the discussion.

The following students of II year are the Eco club coordinators of various departments who spoke on the precautionary measures that must be followed by an individual before the disaster happens.

Apart from these five speakers, the audience also took part in the discussion.

Through this discussion, everyone came to know the steps that must be followed during the disaster by each individual. Thereby, the day was spent effectively where everyone learnt how to safeguard them during the disaster time.

This is to insist the students to follow the precautionary measures and keep them safe during the disaster time.

NATIONAL EXPO ON ECO ALTERNATIVES TO BANNED SUP

The Expo was inaugurated by Thiru.Bhupender Yadav, the Hon'ble Union of Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, in the presence of Dr.L.Murugan, the Hon'ble Union of Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India and Thiru.Siva.V.Meyyanathan, Hon'ble Minister for Environment, Climate change and Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Government of Tamilnadu on 26th September, 2022.

Nearly 41 students from our college participated in the Expo and got benefitted.

Mainly students came to know the machineries used for manufacture of Eco alternative and Eco friendly products.

A DAY OF COMMEMORATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THE OZONE LAYER

On account of International day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, Eco club organised a PPT presentation on September 24,2022 under the guidance of Mrs.Anuradha, Dean of Students and Mrs.Kalpana, Coordinator of Eco Club at the conference hall from 12 to 1pm. The invitation was sent to the members of the Eco club in prior and everyone assembled in the spot at the appropriate time.

Initially, the program began with the welcome address given by Deepika.P, Eco club coordinator of II BBA. Before the start of all the presentations, the audience were asked to give their full attention since we had a quiz session at the end.

The following students of II year are the Eco club coordinators of various departments who presented PPT on different sub topics of the main concept.

As informed earlier, the quiz session happened and it was conducted by Rithika, Eco Club member of II B.Sc.Chemistry. Participants took notes, listened carefully during the presentation and actively participated in the quiz. Two rounds were conducted. Durga and Kalpana from I B.Sc.Mathematics and Durga Devi from II B.Sc.Computer Science were promoted to the 2nd round and finally Durga Devi secured the first position. Mrs.Anuradha, Dean of Students gave the winner a sapling as a token of appreciation. The program was concluded by a vote of thanks given by Jeevitha.E and the whole program was hosted by V. Karunya Nivetha, Council Member of III B.Sc.Mathematics.

INVITE TO THE COMMEMORATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THE OZONE LAYER

On the occasion of International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, Eco club organises a PPT presentation on 24.9.2022 from 12 to 1 p.m. at the conference hall. 

This is to encourage everyone to do their part in preserving the Ozone Layer.

PLEDGE TAKEN ON INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THE OZONE LAYER

Preserving mother nature is every person's duty and responsibility. Today, as our natural resources are depleting each passing day, drastic measures need to be taken by each one of us. A contribution both great and small will drive us towards a better future with a better environment. On account of International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, V.Karunya Nivetha, Council member of III B.Sc.Mathematics rendered a speech on the same on September 16,2022 while the charts were displayed by the Eco Club coordinators in the lawn from 2 to 2:30p.m. At the end, all the students were asked to stretch their right hand in order to take pledge regarding the efforts to be taken in the preservation of the Ozone Layer.

ECO CLUB CELEBRATES 75TH INDEPENDENCE DAY

Independence Day marks the end of British rule in 1947 and the establishment of a free and independent Indian nation. It also marks the anniversary of the partition of the subcontinent into two countries, India and Pakistan. The theme for 75th independence day is " Nation First Always first". Students from CTTE College celebrated independence day with great pomp. Eco club members also showed their love and patriotism toward the country by giving a dance performance

As a part of independence day celebration Eco club members contributed plant saplings for college in order promote greenery environment around us. Plant sapling was planted in college campus in the presence of principal Dr. S. Sridevi, vice principal Dr. R. Menakshi and Mrs. N . Anuradha Head department of chemistry, Dean of students, Eco club coordinator.
